Jill Bogdanowicz on the Evolving Role of Colorists in Virtual Production

In a virtual production roundtable for postPerspective, Jill Bogdanowicz, a senior colorist at Company 3, discussed the evolving role of colorists in virtual production (VP). She highlighted how VP provides filmmakers with flexibility in controlling environments, but certain technical challenges, like pixelization and camera lag, still arise. These issues can impact how much of the imagery displayed on LED volumes is kept in the final product. As Bogdanowicz explained, “If the LED screens are used to show something that’s a relatively small part of the image — maybe something going on outside a window — then it’s a lot more likely to make it into the final film than if it’s representing a whole enormous world.”

Bogdanowicz emphasized that early involvement of colorists in pre-production can be beneficial. This collaboration allows colorists to help ensure the content displayed on VP screens aligns with the on-set lighting, although there are limitations in adjusting colors during shoots. Additionally, she highlighted how virtual production impacts collaboration with VFX teams, who often take over large-scale visual effects work but provide materials for colorists to fine-tune, creating a smooth workflow between on-set captures and final color grading.
