Cathy Shaw joined Company 3’s VFX department when it first opened in 2019 and has contributed her expertise in 2D Visual Effects to an impressive list of projects, including Spider-Man: Far From Home, Joker, Star Wars: The Mandalorian, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, and Star Trek: Picard. Previously, she worked steadily for over a decade as a freelance 2D artist and compositor, primarily on high-end commercials such as Adidas’s Hello Tomorrow and Nike’s Masks. Shaw’s experience across various projects makes her an ideal addition to the Company 3 VFX team, which is called upon regularly to tackle challenging tasks in the compositing, blue screen, beauty work, and general clean-up of shots.
A native of Arizona, Shaw began her work life in the banking field, which took her to Southern California, where she managed a credit union branch. The search for a more exciting and meaningful career path led her to night school classes in graphic design and then to Otis College of Art and Design, where she earned her BFA in Digital Media. There, Shaw realized how much she enjoyed the subtle artistry of transforming imagery through compositing tools like Flame. Though completely different from her first career, Shaw says she still brings elements of the professional and collaborative approach she honed in the financial arena to every job.
