Constantine’s Remaster: A Full-Circle Moment for Dave Hussey

As Warner Bros. celebrates the 20th anniversary of Constantine with a stunning 4K UHD remaster, Director Francis Lawrence sat down with Collider to talk about breathing new life into the cult classic that helped redefine the superhero genre. Reflecting on the film’s legacy, Lawrence discusses working alongside the film’s original colorist, Senior Colorist Dave Hussey.

When approached by Warner Bros. for the 4K release, Lawrence went straight to Hussey, whose expertise helped to shape both the original film and now its newly remastered edition. The 2005 cult classic combines horror, sci-fi, and fantasy into a visually arresting and thought-provoking journey. Lawrence has collaborated with Hussey on nearly all of his movies, “It was like just bringing it back to the right person, as opposed to some new person who’s trying to match it.”

Reuniting with Hussey for this remaster wasn’t just about bringing back a familiar collaborator—it was about preserving the film’s original vision. “The cool thing about the colorist, Dave Hussey, is that he and I actually go way back into the music video days,” Lawrence shared. In 2005, the digital coloring process was still an emerging practice in Hollywood, and Lawrence had to convince Warner Bros. to let him use the technique for Constantine. “I actually had to really manipulate the system and the studio into allowing me to do a digital color correction,” he explained. Hussey, a part of Company 3 then and now, was instrumental in advancing this approach—making him the natural choice to oversee the film’s 4K restoration.
