
Wicked Victory at the Oscars
March 4, 2025 Mar. 4, 2025The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, aired live coast-to-coast from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood this past Sunday, recognizing excellence in cinematic achievements for films released in 2024. On the red carpet, Erivo teased the film’s sequel Wicked: For Good, which will premiere in November.
The show opened with a performance by Wicked’s Oscar-nominated stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. The musical opener kicked off with “Over the Rainbow” before segueing to “Home” from “The Wiz,” as well as “Defying Gravity,” earning a star-studded standing ovation. The show also paid tribute to the heroes and victims of the recent Los Angeles wildfires.
Wicked, colored by Senior Colorist Jill Bogdanowicz, was up for 10 nominations and took home two: Production Design by Nathan Crowley and Lee Sandales and Costume Design by legendary costume designer Paul Tazewell, making history for being the first Black man to win for best costume design.
