Apple TV+’s Silo uses sound as a powerful tool to deepen its portrayal of an underground dystopia. At Company 3 Toronto, Re-recording Mixers Steve Foster and Mark Zsifkovits were tasked with reinforcing the oppressive, unnatural feel of the visuals in their Dolby Atmos mix. With characters living in a 144-story manufactured world, the audio had to reflect both the physical scale and the psychological weight of their confinement.

“The sound of the silo environment plays a key role in immersing viewers, with every creak and groan adding to the oppressive atmosphere of life underground,” the article explains. Foster focused on music and dialogue, ensuring clarity and emotional resonance in every word and note, while Zsifkovits handled sound effects and Foley, adding depth with the mechanical hums and environmental textures unique to the silo’s world.

The process began with meticulously edited tracks built by frequent collaborators Sound Dogs Toronto. These tracks captured the mechanical groans, distant echoes, and atmospheric textures essential to the silo’s unique environment. The audio then moved into one of Company 3’s six mixing theaters, where Foster and Zsifkovits worked side-by-side on an Avid D Control console. Together, they sculpted a soundscape that immerses viewers in the claustrophobic atmosphere, balancing dialogue, music, and sound effects to enhance the tension and emotional depth of each scene.

As Foster and Zsifkovits perfected the sound, paces away, Senior Colorist Bill Ferwerda crafted a grade that enhanced the tension and mystery, completing the series’ immersive aesthetic resulting in a cohesive sensory experience that amplifies the show’s themes of confinement and intrigue.

This collaboration emphasizes the integral role of sound and color in bringing the creators’ vision for Silo to life. To learn more, read the full article on PostPerspective.
