Stefan Sonnenfeld Colors Megahit Jurassic World
June 12, 2015 Jun. 12, 2015Company 3’s Stefan Sonnenfeld did the final work on Universal’s Jurassic World, which gobbled up the biggest opening weekend domestically and worldwide ever. Directed by Colin Trevorrow and shot by John Schwartzman, ASC, Jurassic World brings a contemporary look and feel to the franchise without straying too far from the visual style of the original blockbuster – a movie for which many generations share a special fondness.
The film, which opened in 4274 theaters, the widest release in Universal’s history became the first movie to cross $500 million globally in a single weekend (according to Variety), significantly a full $100 million of that came from China alone. While the studio and industry pundits all expected a big open for Jurassic World, actual ticket sales far exceeded the predictions.
The stereoscopic version, which Sonnenfeld also graded, accounted for a significant number of ticket sales domestically and an overwhelming percentage in many territories outside the US despite the premium generally added to ticket prices, demonstrating that the 3D theatrical experience continues to be valued by moviegoers worldwide.
