Company 3 senior colorist Stephen Nakamura joined director Brad Bird, cinematographer Claudio Miranda, ASC and co-producer/VFX producer Tom Peitzman for an exciting, informative panel discussion at the Cinegear trade show about the art and craft of creating the unique look for Disney’s Tomorrowland.

Panel moderator Jon Fauer, ASC led the capacity crowd at the Paramount Theater on through all facets of building the movie’s visual landscape, from concept through to the mastering work Nakamura did both for traditional d-cinema release and also for the brand-new high-dynamic-range Dolby Vision format, available in select theaters.

Tomorrowland was the first feature ever released in the new format, which allows for brighter highlights, darker shadows and the presentation of certain colors that cannot be seen in a standard d-cinema presentation. Nakamura shared his observations about the pioneering work he did with Bird and Miranda to interpret Tomorrowland‘s look in a way that took advantage of the increased dynamic range while also holding onto the aesthetic feel of standard d-cinema version.
