Jill Bogdanowicz on Crafting Wicked’s Iconic Pink and Green
November 13, 2024 Nov. 13, 2024In a recent interview for postPerspective, Senior Colorist Jill Bogdanowicz discussed sharing her experiences collaborating with Director Jon M. Chu and Cinematographer Alice Brooks to bring Broadway to the big screen. Wicked‘s color palette is more than just aesthetic—it’s integral to the storytelling, representing the contrasting worlds of Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda, played by Ariana Grande. In bringing the wickedly iconic pink and green shades to life, Jill explains, “The viewer’s attention is always on these colors. Naturally, this comes from costumes and makeup and the way Alice shot everything, but it was also something that we were very aware of during the color grading process.”
For Wicked‘s distinct pink-and-green look, Bogdanowicz carefully balanced the colors to represent the lead characters without pushing the audience to a specific emotion. She explains, “A lot of pulling chroma keys, especially in the greens, and making sure the pinks didn’t get oversaturated… we didn’t do anything that could suggest unconsciously what they’re supposed to feel about these two characters.” Her approach aimed to maintain a soft, modern aesthetic, enhancing the story while working with intricate VFX and subtle color variations to fit each scene’s context.
